I Was Todays Years Old When GameDevHQ Started Feeling Like A Real Company
It’s a crazy thing running a business…99% of the time I feel like I’m completely winging it, and for the past 3 years, GameDevHQ has honestly felt like a hobby.
The reason I say hobby, is because it’s just always been me and my partner, Al. We had a community manager once, but it didn’t work out so well from an economic standpoint. Up till very recently, I was the only one working full-time on GameDevHQ. We’re a young startup, with zero experience of how to run an official business… And I think I like that…I feel like I can control the culture and fit and shape the operation of GameDevHQ how I want to (Hopefully for the better).
Let me share a little history of GameDevHQ and how It got started. I’ll write more on this on a full-blown medium article in the future, but for now, here are the highlights and the important parts.
3 years ago, Unity Technologies and I published a series of official unity courses. The intent was to provide retention and teach from a different perspective. (A non-spoonfed perspective). The partnership was a major success, and we built 5 courses in collaboration. It’s one of the greatest achievements of my self-taught career. Being able to work with the company that gave me everything.
The partnership has since faded, and feels like my relationship with them is getting more and more distant. From an education perspective, our companies compete. From an asset store perspective, our companies also compete. It’s been rocky in recent meetings.
But none the less, after our fifth course, I decided I wanted to build a company. I now had the platform, authority, and credibility to become one of the best platforms in existence for learning game development and software engineering.
I have a partner, Al. He’s incredible. A very brilliant and genius game developer, artist, VFX wiz with almost 20 years of experience. He’s the reason my courses are so damn good in quality. And that quality was extremely important to me while working with Unity.
